California to Be Aerially Sprayed With Biochemical

I hadn't even heard of the plan to aerially spray California with a biochemical until I received the following disturbing email from one of my readers:

The California Department of Food and Agriculture, at the invitation of the governor, is aerially spraying our state with a toxic combination of carcinogens and endocrine disruptors encapsulated in particulate plastic. Their lame excuse for doing this that a moth is going to wipe out all agriculture in the state. The moth, called the light brown apple moth, or LBAM, is actually misclassified as a class A pest. In New Zealand and Hawaii this moth does negligible damage to plants and is kept in control by natural predators. Yet, our governor declared California to be in a state of emergency and began spraying the central portion of the state near Monterrey Bay.

The end result was hundreds of dead birds, hundreds of sick people and rivers and the ocean fouled with toxic sludge. Many people have fled the area, but unfortunately, this is a statewide program and the government will not only continue aerially spraying central California, they are coming next to the SF Bay Area. 7 million people will be sprayed with an untested chemical containing 'secret' ingredients, the nature of which are being kept secret because of patent laws that protect the rights of the manufacturer. Spraying will begin in August.

The city governments of Berkeley, Oakland, Marin and Alameda are desperately trying to stop the CDFA and our governor ... but the Monterey local government did this as well and that didn't stop the spray.

The particulate plastic the toxins are contained in enters deeply into the lungs and remains there, permanently. The ingredients that have been disclosed are documented causes of breast cancer, sterility and a host of other scary things. This junk will be in our bodies, in our water, in our soil forever unless we can stop this egregious plan.

This isn't the first time California will be sprayed. Monterey county was sprayed last year. Take a look at this article that states hundreds of people were sickened after the spray.

Apparently, spraying will begin on June 1, 2008 for Santa Cruz & Monterey counties. The Bay area will be sprayed beginning August 1, 2008. The plan is spray again every 30 to 90 days as well.

There are some really cool things about California, but the state government is not one of them. This is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. This biochemical will kill wildlife, harm the environment, ruin organic produce, and pose a huge health hazard.

The main website leading the effort to protect California is LBAMspray.com.

Here's an article about the plan in the San Francisco Chronicle. Also, take a look at this article that reveals the political motivation and vested interests in performing the spray.

The biochemical is called CheckMate and is produced by Suterra, a company based in Bend, Oregon. Here's their contact information, should you desire to let them know how you feel:

Thanks to the Ellis family for informing me about this issue. They are writing about this as news unfolds on their blog Vegan Reader.

Wow Billy - thanks for posting this information.

Has no one read Silent Spring? Did that book not lay out the consequences coherently enough?

Argh! This makes me so mad! Can't we see how short sighted and stupid we are being? Did anyone ever stop to think of not only the consequences of spraying an entire state (you know, where people and other creatures live) with toxic chemicals, but also that the moth might serve some other purpose besides destroying precious crops? We seem to forget what the concept of the food chain actually means.

This is sad and scary. I hope everyone who reads your blog from California writes their representatives, letters to the editor, letters of opposition to the chemical company and so on.

I completely understand the anger. St. Louis, Missouri is home to one of the most evil corporations in the world, Monsanto.

Thanks for your reader and you for bringing up this issue that should concern us all, not just those who live in California.

That's so crazy that the state would continue spraying that stuff after it made people sick and killed wildlife!

I know, I can't believe California is even considering this.

I don't think many people have a concept of the ecosystem. We just feel that the earth is here for us to use and, in using and abusing it, we don't think about the effects of our actions.

Wow, I didn't know Monsanto had their headquarters there. They are an evil corporation. I think a requirement to work there is not having a soul.

This is appalling. No wonder honeybees are dying and the climate is changing, we can't live in harmony with anything anymore.

Re: Monsanto, I think they are actually the most evil corporation in the world. And that's a mouth full!

I have relatives in the Monteray area where they've sprayed. Their dogs both became violently ill after being outside the day they sprayed last year (the humans work inside and sadly didn't think about the possible effects on their fur babies) While their pets pulled through (after IV's, much medication and vet care over 2000$,) statistics say that several thousand animals died or had to be euthanised due to respiratory problems and internal bleeding that vets said "appeared to be from effects of the chemicals"... Funny how no one was ever able to absolutely "proove" the spraying was lethal to some pets... (Yeah, I'm a big believer in cover-ups and conspiracy theories though, sorry if I'm dramatic.)

^^^I'm also possibly the world's worst speller! That's what happens when I feel passionately about something I guess.

OH! And only 10 days until VegFest! Woo!

(Great Blog BTW)

Thanks for your comments everyone.

Tofu Mom: It makes sense to be a conspiracy theorist. Our government has shown us what they are capable of time and time again.

Enjoy Vegfest! I know I will.

I was under the impression that USDA/CDFA had not yet made a decision as to what Light Brown Apple Moth treatment they were going to use in the 2008 eradication program. Interesting that we already know the manufacturer.

I would have never guessed California would be doing something like this!! Very scary.

to anonymous,

the same company will make the product. they are trying to design a product that lasts 90 days instead of 30 days so they won't terrorize people monthly because according to them people are really just afraid of being aerially sprayed, even if you sprayed them with water they'd be scared. the 30 day application made me sick for 3 months. they are also in new zealand experimenting with some new claylike goop that doesnt wash off vegetation. one scientist recommended paintball guns. i dont care if i have to leave the state, i'm not going to get sprayed again with that poison.
